Leaving Things Better

Kind Is the New Happy

Doing all we can to bring a little light to those we touch in our daily travels increases our own happiness and feelings of well-being. Countless studies prove that kindness and generosity have been linked to greater life satisfaction, stronger relationships and better mental and physical health. Generous people even live longer!

This page is a growing collection of ideas to help us live a little more generously, notice the needs around us and create small ripples of goodness in the world.

This is love in action.

September Kindness Practice

Thank the people who often go unnoticed. The waiter, the driver, the delivery person. The customer service rep. Learn a name. Make eye contact. Leave a compliment. Write a review. Let someone know they're appreciated.

Kindness Experiements

Choose one or more to do this week:

  • Leave an unexpectedly generous tip.

  • Pick up ten pieces of litter.

  • Bring flowers to someone who's had a hard week.

  • Write a thank-you email.

  • Tell a manager about an exceptional employee.

  • Carry snacks or water to offer someone in need.

  • Introduce yourself to a neighbor.

  • Become someone's biggest encourager.

Bigger Ways to Make a Difference

If you have the time and capacity, choose an organization in your area or globally that helps children, adults, animals or the planet. Mentor, volunteer, donate or find another creative way to get involved.
